Biography

Bret Tack, ASA, is a Managing Director at Cogent Valuation and leads the firm’s Los Angeles office. He has provided business valuation and related financial advisory services on a full-time basis since 1985.

Mr. Tack has managed more than 2,000 valuation engagements involving companies ranging from small, closely held businesses to multinational, publicly traded companies with revenues in the tens of billions. His work has been performed for a wide range of purposes, including mergers and acquisitions, fairness and solvency opinions, corporate restructurings, leveraged buyouts, early-stage equity investments, estate and gift tax planning, ESOP transactions, financial reporting and compliance, and litigation support.

Mr. Tack has valued companies across virtually all major industries, with particular experience in aerospace, restaurants, medical devices, entertainment, printing, retail, wholesale, computer hardware and software, internet, information and market research, professional services, financial services, real estate development and syndication, apparel, food and beverage, consumer products, and manufacturing. He has also valued, or determined appropriate royalty rates for, a variety of intellectual property assets, including patents, trademarks, music rights, film rights, and software.

Mr. Tack has extensive experience in corporate transactions, including complex securities design and equity allocation matters. He has also addressed dozens of valuation matters with the Internal Revenue Service for income, gift, and estate tax purposes, with consistently favorable outcomes. His expert testimony experience includes appearances in various courts, including the United States Tax Court.

Prior to joining Cogent Valuation, Mr. Tack provided business valuation and financial advisory services with Houlihan Lokey from 1985 to 1992.

Mr. Tack is an Accredited Senior Appraiser in Business Valuation with the American Society of Appraisers. He has written and spoken extensively on valuation topics, including programs offered for MCLE and CPA credit.
